TMNT: Mutants in Manhattan
Platinum Games are bringing the Turtles up from the sewers.
For as long as there have been video games in your home, the Teenage Mutant Ninja (or Hero, if you were a censorship-suffering Brit) Turtles have had a place in your cartridge slot / disk drive / digital download folder. From the NES to the PS4, Game Boy to 3DS, our half-shelled friends have had varying degrees of success, from the excellent Turtles in Time in the arcade and on the SNES, to the dire Out of the Shadows on PSN. On a downward trend (let’s never speak of the live action film), no-one could blame you for thinking the Turtles weren’t exactly primed for a new outing…
Christmas wasn’t quite over for Turtles fans in early January though, it seemed, when Xbox achievements and artwork leaked for a new title – this time coming from Platinum Games, fresh off their success with re-energising another 80s franchise with the excellent Transformers Devastation (Liam reviewed it in Issue 003). Even better, still before any official announcement was made, screens from the game leaked showing off the brother’s new cel-shaded look. Finally, after a cheeky “Offical leak” tweet from Platinum, the game was revealed in all its glory;
Taking inspiration from IDW’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic series, with a 4-player co-op campaign, Platinum Games’ distinctive action pedigree, and a rumoured open-world to explore, it certainly looks more than promising. As a child of the 80s, and a Nickelodeon-watching adult (seriously, the current cartoon is ace, and the revised intro music a thing of joy), I can’t wait for some more Turtles Power this summer
