Prey for the Gods
Can this spiritual successor emerge from the shadow of the colossus it’s imitating?
Out of nowhere it seems – though in development for more than a year at this point – a team of three game development veterans announced this month ‘Prey for the Gods’, and showed something that if you’re a fan of Team Ico’s ‘Shadow of the Colossus’ (celebrating its 10th anniversary this month), will definitely whet your appetite for this obvious spiritual successor.
While it may take visual cues from the PS2 classic, the team of Brian Parnell, Tim Wiese and Hung-Chien Liao are taking gameplay inspiration from some less obvious choices; Deus Ex, DayZ and spaceship management game FTL – games where your choices have meaning and consequence toward the experiences you have. Couple those ideas with the bleak, snowy setting and current modest scope and scale, and the team at No Matter may be on to something rather good.
With no publisher so far, hopefully the game can be fleshed out enough for a larger demo in 2016 at one of the many games expos, and someone can be persuaded (though it shouldn’t take much) to pick it up for a wide release – it feels, even at this nascent stage, like there’s enough to excite fans and new players alike (even the creator of SotC has contacted the Brian Parnell to express his positivity). Someone get @Yosp on it, yeah?
You can find out more about the process and thoughts behind the game in 80 Level’s interview with the team.
